Trail Development & MaintenanceThe PVTA receives funding through the SLRD from the Pemberton Valley Utilities & Services committee (PVUS), memberships, donations and grants. The money is spent primarily on trail maintenance throughout spring to fall. Professional trail builders are employed to carry out the work and Trail Days are held throughout the year for the community to come get involved, learn, meet the team and have fun! The paid PVTA trail crew keep up with the major tasks at hand, however a large proportion of the work is still done by many dedicated volunteers in the area, thank you!

Starting in 2019, RSTBC began the RSTBC Mountain Bike Trail Management Pilot Project, a long-term project to review and revise its mountain bike trail policy and standards, and to develop a suite of associated operational tools with the aim of modernizing mountain bike trail management on public lands in BC.
In 2020 The Pemberton Trails Master Plan was released. This important document was signed off on by the Líl̓wat Nation, SLRD, RSTBC, VOP and the PTVA. It is actively used as an important resource doc when thinking about building new trails and looking after existing ones.
In 2022 the Trails Working Group (TWG) was formed which meets quarterly. The committee includes representatives from the Líl̓wat Lands & Resource department, RSTBC, SLRD, VOP, PVTA, PORCA, PWA, SPS, SCF. We work together as a united front to help guide the Trail Planning & Maintenance process in Pemberton. Our work plan is shared and no major work is done without respectful consent. There is a process that we honour - we support each other.

A future path. RSTBC is streamlining the Section 57 process. It will feel similar, but will be more thorough and accessible: learn more

Interested in how a Section 57 application works? This is how it looks like for us:
- Project Concept to be sent to the PVTA by the Project Lead
- Work Proposal presentation by the PVTA* to the Trials Working Group (Líl̓wat, RSTBC, SLRD, VOP, PVTA, PORCA, PWA, SPS, SCF) for cross check
- Project Brief package by the PVTA* to the Líl̓wat Land Use Referral Committee for approval
- Archaeological study by Líl̓wat Land & Resource field technician
- Environmental study by a local ecologist
- Letters of support from land owners, local government, Líl̓wat, SLRD, VOP, developers, other stakeholders
- Full Section 57 package by the PVTA to RSTBC for approval
- If approved it is then under the PVTA's responsibility to build/maintain the trail going forward in collaboration with the other participating orgs or individuals
- This work is done before shovels hit the ground

Community Trail Maintenance Program?
In 2024, the PVTA launched a new Community Trail Maintenance Program, which aims to recognize and support dedicated volunteers who quietly put hundreds of hours into Pemberton's trail network every year. If you perform maintenance or remove deadfall on existing trails and this is the first you're hearing about it, please reach out to [email protected] to determine your eligibility.
The PVTA is grateful to the Devinci Community Grant Program for providing funding towards this program, in addition to generous PVTA members and donors whose financial contributions help to support this work.

Sustainable Trail Building and Maintenance
In partnership between the Pemberton and District Public Library and Veronica Woodruff of the Stewardship Pemberton Society and the Pemberton Wildlife Association the below video was created in consultation with Pemberton Off-road Cycling Association (PORCA) and Pemberton Valley Trails Association (PVTA) and celebrates the newly formed Pemberton Recreational Trails Plan Monitoring Committee. A collab committee launched to help support amazingly sustainable trail networks in Pemberton.
This talk is about the evolution of trail use and management, what has been done really well and how we can collaboratively improve in the future for the protection of species and habitat while maintaining great recreational trail networks.
