President Report:
  • This is an open space - as members of the PVTA you have a voice. Being members and being here today means you have a right to vote. In addition please speak up if you have comments or questions as we go.
  • In 2022 & 2023 the PVTA began to find its feet. A new brand, board and complete internal management and planning reorganization has meant it's been a crazy busy two years. It’s still early days and we have so much still left to do (our todo list is gigantic, just read the 75 page Trails Master Plan - TMP), but we feel the organization is strong again and on a positive path forward. Most of all I’d just like to make some room here today to thank everyone who has been involved past and present. We couldn’t have gotten here without you.
  • Special mentions of thanks! Roxanne Joe from the Líl̓wat Lands & Resources, Allison MacDonald from the SLRD and Bree Thorlakson, Ian Krugar and Simon Fry from PORCA. It’s a pleasure working with you! Also not to forget our incredible volunteer board who work so hard behind the scenes in their free time, after work, late into the night and on their weekends, thank you!
  • You might all know Darren as our paid lead Trail Maintenance guy and historic trail builder in the Pemberton Valley. His work ethic and quality is second to none. Thank you Darren!
  • Also a special thanks to our ED Allison Gilchrist who joined in late 2022 and has been a transformative figure in the PVTA’s development.
  • Lastly, a big thank you to all those trail farries past and current. We don’t always know who you are, but your work in helping clear downdtrees, cut brush, add drainage and make trail repairs is not left unnoticed.

Trail Maintenance:
  • FIRST! 6 regular PVTA volunteer trail days held so far in 2023 (April-September). One more will be today and the last for 2023 on November 4th, 8 in total!
  • Total volunteer trail hrs YTD: 671 hrs Jan-Sept
  • Total paid trail hrs YTD: 348.50 hrs Jan-Sept
  • No. of Trails Worked on YTD: 68 Jan-Sept (from 185 total)

TrailForks Usage Stats (Jan-Sept):
  • 2023: 6,736 vs 2022: 7,022 ride counts Jan-Sept. Down 4% YTD

Achievements:
  • Projects: Mapping. 7 months of work and the entire Pemberton Trail Network has now been updated on TrailForks. The PVTA are now using TrailForks as the go to map app for all trail users going forward. It is a free and simple to use trail app that caters for all trail users. Unsure where to go? Not sure which trail is which? Where can I ride my horse, bike or hike? Download the app and take a look, it’s now all on there!
  • Gravitron - Kacwepcwépa (Ka-kwep-kwep-a) re-work, re-name and opening ceremony in honour of Grahem Haywood
  • Tour de Soo 2 Extension south to make a horse trail
  • Tour de Soo 3 Extension south to make a hiking trail and join the new S2S trail

Gravitron Trail redeveloped and renamed in honour of the late Graham Haywood

11/7/2023

Public invited to participate in trail dedication and renaming ceremony July 15, 2023

Pemberton, BC – With funding from the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD), the Pemberton area mountain bike trail formerly known as Gravitron has been redeveloped and renamed, in honour of former SLRD staff member, Graham Haywood.

Haywood passed away in 2020. He was the SLRD’s Senior Project Coordinator, and had also served as Interim Director of Legislative and Corporate Services. Prior to joining the SLRD, Haywood was employed as a Land Manager with Líl̓wat Nation. An avid mountain biker, he also served as a Board member and volunteer of Pemberton Valley Trails Association (PVTA).

In consultation with his family, the SLRD has partnered with Lil’wat Nation and the PVTA to recognize Haywood.
The SLRD’s Electoral Area Directors (EAD) Committee provided funding of up to $12,000 to the PVTA for the Gravitron trail project in Haywood’s memory. The PVTA used the funding to revitalize the double-black diamond, experts-only trail, repairing drainage and trail surfaces while retaining the exhilarating experience for riders. The redeveloped trail will be maintained and operated by the PVTA.

Líl̓wat Nation has honoured Haywood’s memory by renaming the trail Kacwepcwépa (Ka-kwep-kwep-a), the Ucwalmicwts phrase for “to come back to memory”.

The public is invited to attend a trail dedication and renaming ceremony on July 15, 2023 (1:00 p.m.) at the trail head (adjacent to the transmission tower, approximately 9.5 kilometres up the Mackenzie Basin Forest Service Road) with representatives from Líl̓wat Nation, the PVTA and the SLRD in attendance.

Lots of amazing trail work has taken place over the past couple of months including:
  • Mud management on Bathtub and Silálts
  • Spruce up of Nimby, Moose Jah and Back Pains, Bob Gnarly, Lower Mackenzie Cruise
  • A ton of work got accomplished for the April 1st trail day including clearing and brushing on the Adventure Ranch Loop, Side Saddle and Tour de Soo. Bike trails that were worked on included Blood, Sweat & Fear, Hawaii 2, The 306, Fat Tug, EconoDave, Smell the Glove, Meat Grinder and other One Mile trails.
  • Great success on cleaning up Piece of Cake - courtesy of the hard-working Xet̓ólacw students  that took part in a Hiking and Traditional Sites Supercourse! Students also went to "Smoke A Howie" and came up with some Ucwalmícwts name suggestions for the renaming. This event was not PVTA-organized, but was supported by the PVTA trail builder Darren Nicoll,  thanks to Jack Lowrie from Xet̓ólacw school for organizing this trail day!

Thank you WB Foundation EnviroFund

The PVTA was the proud recipient of a generous grant from @wbfoundation,Whistler Blackcomb Foundation EnviroFund to fix up a section of the Mackenzie Basin trail under a project titled Mackenzie Basin Road Loop Upgrade Phase 1.

The work focused on a portion of trail and a stream crossing near the exit to Live Like Lisa that experiences seasonal flooding and erosion. The work included re-contouring the trail leading to the crossing, improving drainage, replacing the wooden crossing once the trail grades were re-established. Not only has the work done made the trail more functional for bikers, hikers, equestrians and moto riders, the improvements will benefit water quality and surrounding vegetation.

Also, a huge thank you to Zander from @howlercontracting who was contracted to work on this project with us.

Cream Puff Closure

27/2/2023

Safety Notice from Howler Contracting:
Due to the construction requirements of the Sunstone Subdivision the trail Cream Puff will be closed for the coming months from February 22nd 2023.  Most importantly though, the trail's iconic experience of riding along incredible natural slabs will be preserved within the new subdivision for generations to come through wide trail corridor that runs through the subdivision.  Unfortunately there will be two on grade road crossings shown in the map below but the locations have been designed to ensure the best possible experience for the trail user while still providing access to the surrounding properties.

As part of Sunstone's commitment to the community they have hired Howler Contracting Limited to build a fully accessible Green level trail outside their subdivision called the Sunstone to Lake Trail.  This trial will create access on the east side of the Mackenzie/ Mosquito Lake trail network providing a beautiful journey through stunning old growth trees and spectacular viewpoints.  This trail will be completed by early summer 2023 as a gravel surfaced trail.  The top section above Smell the Glove will open first allowing Upper Cream Puff to be utilized, check Trailforks for the latest updates.  Upon completion of this gravel trail Howler will then be working on further improving trail connectivity for Sunstone on the paved section of the valley trail through the sports fields along with another community walking trail on the west side of the subdivision.  Sunstone has been the principle contributor to the development of the recreation site completing earthworks for: the Soccer fields, Skills Park and Baseball Field and is working on delivering more.
